Trevanian's Desk/On film
'These hundred or so films were chosen as those most likely to retain their entertainment value and significance for an English-Speaking mass audience, despite the effects of increased cinema literacy and the callusing of sensibilities caused by exposure to contemporary high-volume, high-impact, high-violence films designed to enter the consciousness through the autonomic nervous system, rather than through the mind. As a former professor of film history and criticism, I am aware that the absence of many historical 'landmarks', film-society chestnuts and art-house warhorses will raise both eyebrows and hackles.
Sadly, limiting the selection to films available to a contemporary, English-speaking, non-cognoscenti viewer admits rather few non-English language films and very few silents. But it is a great praise to those foreign and silent films included that they are able to evoke and entertain, even through the language barrier and the even greater barrier of silence.
An asterisk indicates those films whose appearance on this list will surprise many conventional students of the cinema, because of their 'B' budgets, because of their relative lack of success when released, or because of genre snobbism.'
