This is probably not the story you want to hear, because it involves a library, and, when a library buys a book, lots of people get to read it, but you only get paid for one book. The library where I work bought the book, and I read it. Thank you for writing "The Crazyladies of Pearl Street".

About Street of the Four Winds Excellent...as all of what Trevanian writes. Publish as soon as possible. (Notify when it comes out?) Yes. Hardbound would be great. I'll pre-order now. Signed? Absolutely! Tell me how to get a signed edition!! Bottom line is I'll take whatever edition I have to....to get the damn book.

T, I want to tell you what impact Shibumi has had on my life. I read it when it first was on the shelves in paperback in 1979. I was 20. I’m a somewhat regular guy from the Midwest although maybe not too typical for an American. I love the US of course. Shibumi taught me so much and prompted me to learn French (not so well yet!). I often think of the Japanese family in the railway station homeless but still with their dignity. I have had many challenges and things are the best ever these days. I am off to Singapore for work next week for my first real visit to Asia although I know Singapore does not qualify. I eat Thai food every chance possible.

I think you should write another book with Nicholai, at least for my cultural benefit if nothing else. If I can ever do anything for you don’t hesitate. I live in Tampa but travel a lot. Shibumi is my favorite book of the approximately 500 novels I have read. Almost all Ludlum, Le Carre, De Mille, Deighton, Michener, Puzo, Pat Conroy, Turrow, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Van Lustbader, and tons more. You’re the man.

Hello – Having enjoyed “Shibumi”, “Hot Night in the City”, “Crazy Ladies…”, “Summer of Katya”, and “The Main”, I admire the creator of the works; whoever that is. Do we need to personify an author who wishes to remain anonymous? Why do we need to know the source? What compels us to put a face on whatever we experience? Genesis has man made in the image of God. Do you think that makes us important? You bet your sweet ass it does; at least on our own minds. I believe it was a man or men who wrote Genesis. When we pick an apple from a tree and find it delicious, we save the seeds and plant them. When we discover that apples from the new tree are not as sweet, we need to consider the soil and climate where we planted the seeds. There are many variables involved. We may think that the original tree was planted by God and blessed by some divine magic. Is divine intervention the secret to perfection? Let us ask God…silence. We hear and see nothing. We are forsaken. Then next year our new tree begins to produce apples even sweeter than the original. Our prayers are answered. Like Moishe’s gesture of love in “The Main”, it is done anonymously. “If I had accepted…gratitude, even affection maybe, then it would not have been a pure gesture of love.” Is this Trevanian’s secret, the reason for his or their anonymity? Trevanian’s work borders on being divine. However, I believe that he would insist on his mortality and fallibility.

– With love, Louis
